Essential 6

This Essential shows demonstrations of skills to promote health, help shape the healthcare delivery system, and advance values through policy processes and advocacy.  Essential VI also uses political competence to improve the health outcomes of populations and improve the quality of the healthcare delivery system. It understands the principles of healthcare economics, payment methods, and the relationship between policy and health economics.

I feel I have met this essential by exploring the cost of medications and studies during my clinical and assignments. I still have trouble with understanding what insurance does and does not pay for and if patients need trials of alternative medications or not. However, I am confident that with more clinical training, I will be more prepared in the clinical setting. The Assignments I chose for this essential are Healthy People 2020 because it suggests a way for me to become a more active advocate and to help decrease the rate of teenage pregnancy in my community. I also chose to add one of my Adult and Geriatric SOAP notes (Geriatric assessment ) which includes some examples of costs to the patient. This assignment clearly represents the continued growth of learning and the initiative to monitor and care for my patients.
